Next Sunday at 10 AM, there will be an Islamorada Historical Bike Tour at the Hurricane Monument. Mother's are free. After the tour, why not take her to lunch at one of the many great restaurants on the Old Highway. You will be a hit with mom. No need to provide birth certificates, we'll trust you on this one.

While riding down the Heritage Trail, around the 91.5 Mile Marker there is a shopping area called Tavernier Towne. Inside the plaza is a place called De Paula Jewelers. They have a bike rack directly in front of there store and invite cycli

sts to come in and cool off. Next door is Winn Dixie where you can resupply.

Billy works at De Paula's and is an expert on Treasure recovered from the waters of the Florida Keys. In fact, he has part of the shop set up as a treasury museum. They have coins recovered from sunken ships from the reefs in the Florida Keys.

Billy should of been a history teacher. I was informed that the Spaniards shipping route to South and Central America was south via the Caribbean and when gold and silver was discovered, it was taken back to Spain between Cuba and the Florida Keys, up the Coast to Georgia and North Carolina to make the eastward cruise.

Sailing through the Florida Straights was dangerous because of the Coral Reefs, and the Bahamas to the East 50 miles. Also the Spaniards enemies, the English, who applied the trade of of Privateering was preying on their treasured filled ships. This lead eventually to pirating and became known as the "Pirates of the Caribbean".

One display inside De Paulas is a weapon inside a water filled tank. He said when artifacts were first discovered in the Keys, collectors did not know that removing the artifacts from the water would eventually lead to the decaying of the prize. Now they are a lot more careful on preserving such items.

On your ride down the Heritage Trail, swing by De Paulas to cool off and get a free history tour on Treasure Hunting, Pirates and local history.

Key West Bound

Monday April 22nd, I will be riding my bike 100 miles to Key West. A long the way, I will take photos of the bike trail with updated information of the bike path. I will also feature bike friendly businesses on the trail, photograph them and present their bio on my Facebook and website blog. Hope to see some of you.
