The Keys was officially discovered by Ponce De Leon in 1513. But some historians believe Spaniards from Puerto Rico were coming to the Keys as early as the late 1400's to enslave native Indians. This would explain why the Natives were hostile towards castaways so early on. Eventually, the Spaniards discovered that Native Indians were excellent divers. The natives discovered it was profitable to keep castaways alive. Spanish fishermen from Cuba negotiated with the natives to do contract work for the Spaniards as divers for some of there off-shore wrecks. Our Historical ride is not a typical tourist attraction.
